Tevez´s future looks to Spain

Roque Santa Cruz just let the cat out of the bag: Carlos Tévez is homesick. “He wants to be among his people, who are in Argentina. Your heart goes out to his family. His siblings and his daughters are there … when you feel that your homeland is calling you back, you could end up giving up everything to return. Still, I think he will see it out and fulfil his contract with City before returning home”, stated in a Radio Station the Paraguay forward.

Given Santa Cruz´s statements everyone can infer that Tévez is unsettled and therefore not happy at Manchester City and is considering the idea of returning to his homeland Argentina, to be with his family. Kind of impossible, isn´t it? I´ll explain. Tevez´s salary is pretty unaffordable by now to any of the football clubs in Argentina´s top-flight, even the big guns such as River Plate or Boca Juniors. And, there won´t be other Robinho case with Manchester City loaning the player and paying half of his wages so if Tévez really wants to leave for Argentina he either has to reduce his emoluments or quit football. It´s been nearly five years since the argentinean first set foot upon the UK and it´s well known how difficult is for South American footballers to blend in when it comes to non Spanish speaking countries. We can, therefore, understand this as a sort of signal from the footballer who would probably be looking for a move to Italy and –mainly- Spain.

Tevez suffered a thigh injury during the match against Arsenal at City of Manchester last Sunday. The player – increasing rumours that he is unsettled- asked for permission to fly to Argentina and see his family while being treated of his injury. The manager, Roberto Mancini, did not hesitate a second and agreed conscious that he is currently Manchester City ´s most in-form player and the real star. The permission was given until Monday having in mind that he could be available for Thursday´s Europe League clash against polish side Lech Poznan. Santa Cruz earth shaking statements come up just in this very moment –with the player in Argentina, missing next Premier League game.

Statistics and Tevez´s current form for Manchester City tell exactly the opposite to this story. The Argentina striker is second in the table of top scorers with seven goals in nine games, just like Chelsea´s Florent Malouda. Until this injury Tevez had appeared undisputedly in Mancini´s starting eleven since the beginning of the Premier League competition. Mancini has put all his faith in his striker. Moreover, the manager just paved the way for Tevez to be the regular Manchester City nº9 at the expense of Craig Bellamy, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz himself. Being said that, it would be a huge blow for the Italian –and also the club- if Tevez finally decides to leave the club in summer.

Carlos Tévez has been more than once a target of Spain´s giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. It is understood that the player is not quite confident in Manchester City´s chances to win titles, something that adds up to other issues such as the difficulties with the language and UK´s weather conditions. That´s precisely why Tévez would be thinking about a move to Italy or Spain. Chelsea would be the only possible destination for Tévez within the Premier League as a perfect replacement for Didier Drogba –Only if Tévez wants to stay in the UK. Elsewhere beyond the Premier League there are just three clubs with economic potential, room available for him and chances to win silverware: Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Nevertheless, I would rule out the Catalan side just because they have already a pure striker in likes of David Villa. Real Madrid is packed with quality forwards but the predictable move of Karim Benzemá to Manchester United or other European top club at the end of the season might help Tévez to be one step closer to Spain.
